Meet the 2018 Waterfront Staff!
Richard Walter is the new Waterfront/Youth Sailing Coordinator. Richard has been on the water his whole life (so far!) and has sailed for more than 20 years. His sailing experience ranges from dinghy sailing, to racing boats, to cruising boats, to schooners and square-rigged vessels (US Brig NIAGARA, USCGC EAGLE, w/v Charles W. Morgan). He worked more than 10 years on the water at Mystic Seaport.
Richard has degrees from the University of Connecticut (B.A.), University of Hartford (M.Ed.), and part of a degree from UMass School of Law (J.D.). Currently, Richard works for the Stonington Public Schools as a high school history teacher; he has been there almost 20 years. There, aside from history courses, he taught Maritime Studies 1200 to high school students for college credit as a UConn adjunct professor through the Avery Point campus.
Richard lives with his wife Meg, a lifelong sailor in Westerly Rhode Island. Son Thomas, a UConn student, is also an avid sailor. They have three Labrador retrievers. They spend time on the water aboard s/v INDIGO, a 36-foot C&C soon-to-be-moored in Stonington Harbor. Finally, Richard is a 30-year member and current drum major for the Ancient Mariners Connecticut Fife and Drum Corps. Steeped in nautical music, the Mariners play throughout the Northeast and regularly perform in Basel, Switzerland. Email Richard
